University of Kuopio is an independent organization located in Eastern Finland and specializing in academic education and research on human health and environmental issues. The University has five faculties (Business and Information Technology, Medicine, Natural and Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, Social Sciences) and several research centres (e.g. Food and Health Research Centre, Drug research and Development Centre, Clinical Research Centre, The A.I. Virtanen Institute, Research Centre for Public Health), and approx. 40 educational and research departments, of which 14 are also clinics of the Kuopio University Hospital.
The Department of Clinical Nutrition offers a curriculum in clinical nutrition leading to MSc degree in Health Sciences with a specialization in clinical nutrition and the post-graduate program leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. The main research interest of the Department is to examine the interaction between nutritional and other life style factors and genetic factors in the development of chronic diseases. The aim is to define an optimal diet for the prevention and treatment of these nutrition related diseases. The Department has excellent research facilities, human metabolic unit with indirect calorimeter, and access to the clinics at the Kuopio University Hospital. In 2003 the Department's resources for food and nutrition research doubled when the Food and Health Research Centre (ETTK) was joined administratively with the Department. ETTK has new laboratory facilities specifically planned for studies in health effects of foods and food components. ETTK has multidisciplinary know-how in nutrition physiology, food toxicology, clinical nutrition, phytochemistry, and food analysis and biotechnology, and it works in close collaboration with several Departments of the University of Kuopio in projects related to food and nutrition.
