The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) is an independent public body with its legal entity based on a special law. Key activities are knowledge development, knowledge application and innovation. TNO as an RTO, offers its services and know-how to national and international clients. TNO, with its 5100 employees is active in the European Framework Programmes, as a partner as well as a coordinator of numerous projects and network activities, including a wide range of projects involving SME s. In 2003, TNO's total turnover amounted to 496 Meuro (excl. the turnover of TNO companies). TNO is active in five core areas: Within the core area Quality of Life, with 1100 employees, 60% of which have an academic degree, Food and Nutrition Research, located in Zeist, is a key activity, focussing on Product and Process Innovation, Quality and Safety, and Nutrition and Health. The vast expertise in Nutrition and Health research, with a range of analytical and in vitro tools not found elsewhere in one location, is expanding further due to the TNO leadership of the Nutrigenomics Network of Excellence of the EU 6th Framework Programme. In the field of Product and Process innovation TNO has established a broad range of relationships with internationally operating industries in the field of cereals, bakery products and ingredients in this field; its position, together with Wageningen University, in research on wheat gluten, its role in bakery products and its interactions with other ingredients and processing aids is recognised word wide.
