Rothamsted Research is the major UK research organisation with a remit to improve the production, protection and end use quality of arable crops. It currently employs about 500 scientific staff on a 400 Ha site in Harpenden and is coming to the end of an extensive programme of rebuilding and renovation at a total cost of about £40m. It receives substantial funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Research Council of the UK via a Competitive Strategic Grant, and other competitive grants and from the Department of Food and Rural Affairs and the Food Standards Agency. It has been active in EU research for over 20 years and currently participates in approximately 30 programmes, of which we co-ordinate about 14.
