The Institute of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization (IHAR) is the Polish government research centre in the multi-disciplinary area of plant improvement, biotechnology, germplasm conservation and enhancement consisting of seven research divisions, seven experimental stations and three affiliated plant breeding companies. The Centre of Excellence in Crop Improvement for Sustainable Agriculture operates as a part of IHAR supported by the funds from the Fifth EU Framework Programme. The Centre is integrated with the ERA, foreign and domestic research institutes and universities, plant breeding companies and commercial enterprises through conferences, workshops, short/long term visits and networking on GMO and genetic resources. IHAR is the editor of six scientific journals and numerous brochures.
The Laboratory of Nutritional Evaluation of Plant Materials has a strong knowledge within chemistry and nutritive value of cereals. During the 30 years of its activity the screening methods applicable in the breeding programmes of cereals towards better end-use quality have been developed. The Laboratory consists of chemistry lab and animal house. The chemistry lab is equipped with GC, HPLC, Amino acid Analyser, Kjeltec Auto Analyser, viscometers and other facilities relevant to analyse the chemical composition of plant products. Since dietary fibre, nonstarch polysaccharides and viscosity are decisive for end-use quality of cereal grains the methods of their analysis are routinely carried out techniques in the lab. Recently study on the biopolymers structure and molecular weigh in relation to baking quality has been initiated. We are involved in six R&D projects and in 3 of them we have national and international collaborations.
